I settled myself on my bar stool and looked at Nicole, she seemed quite relaxed despite all of the attention. She stood beside me looking around the the now crowded bar sipping her drink as though we were old friends.
“Did you just get in when I saw you this morning? I asked in the way of conversation, she looked and me and nodded “Yes ah tru meh did jes get ere, ann meh did raaaly need fuh git ah coppa tea tru meh did ‘ungry since mawnin’ she said rapidly. I stared at her blankly trying to figure out what the hell she just said. She glanced at me and suddenly threw her head back and laughed with genuine enjoyment, her laughter was infectious and I couldn’t help joining in. I rather suspected that somehow the joke was on me. “Baby! the look on your face is killing me!, I said I had just gotten in and I needed some hot tea because I was so hungry!” she said in what sounded like an American accent.
I couldn’t believe it, she had been playing me from the moment we met! “Oh my God! “you were so messing with me!” I said incredulously. “Baby, in my profession you have to be able to switch it up like that” she said snapping her fingers “today, when I first saw you I honestly thought you were my country woman”. She tilted her head to one side I looked me over “I can’t place your accent but I would definitely put money on Vincy or Guyanese, which is it?”
“Baby, I can be whatever you want” I said tossing imaginary long hair and snapping my fingers the way she did a moment ago. “touché!” she said eyes dancing with merriment “I like you, whats your name? oh wait! don’t tell me” she looked me over from head to toe “…..hmmmmm, you look like a Candy” she said. “No, wait…..something a little less sweet – Brandy! yep you’re Brandy” she said triumphantly. “I think I like it” I said, and I really did like the idea of having an alter ego called Brandy, I was also starting to like Nicole and I couldn’t wait to hear her story.
