Nicole’s Story – Despair

Nicole felt adrift in a cloud of disillusionment, it appeared that the committed relationship she felt she had with Paul had only been a figment of her own imagination. She had been deluding herself all along thinking that Paul loved and wanted only her! Obviously this was not the case. The thought of a relationship without exclusivity was abhorrent, yet she had never broached the subject with Paul. In fact, she had never given any thought to discussing the conditions or even the nature of their relationship!

In retrospect, she realized that she had held Paul to standards without his knowledge or consent.  He had been her first and it hurt to know that she was not enough but she was mature enough to realize that he was not entirely at fault. Nevertheless, the pain was a constant, nauseating, hard knot in her stomach that refused to go away. The rational voice in her head reasoned that her own inexperience had led her down this path. An experienced person would have voiced their expectations; how could she blame Paul for seeing other people?

Nicole’s Story – Unshed Tears

Although she tried to drown herself in schoolwork over the next few days, Nicole constantly checked in with her mom. She was relieved when her dad was allowed to go home and she wept silently when he finally spoke to her on the phone. His speech was slurred but he was adamant that she should not return to Jamaica until her semester ended. When the therapist said that he was responding well and it appeared that he was on his way to a full recovery, Nicole was relieved! she could hardly wait for the semester to end! She would be on the first flight out. She would throw her arms around her dad and hug him tightly… or so she thought.

Nicole’s Story Prt 7

Nicole was happy; she was adapting to life in the big city and enjoying school. The coursework was copious, challenging, and very fascinating. There was so much to cover and she spent hours in her room happily engrossed in assignments. All was well in her world then something unexpected happened.

Nicole did not see much of Marie during the week; she was either working late at the office or travelling with the other partners. Despite the longer hours dictated by her new position, Marie seemed much more animated and happier and it became customary for her to cook a big Sunday dinner. Nicole would help and they would talk about their week over dinner while Marie’s favorite jazz instrumentals played in the background.
