Nicole’s Story Prt 2

At 60 Aunt Marie was a tall, rail thin impeccably dressed woman with close cropped hair and smooth ebony skin. Her features were narrow with the arched eyebrows and sharp cheekbones of a supermodel. She had carefully painted red lips, a brisk manner and the kind of sharp-eyed gaze that dug into you. She certainly looked the part of the successful executive. Nicole had envisioned a warm welcome but the perfunctorily cheek she was offered in greeting dispelled any ideas she had of bonding.

Marie, as she preferred to be called, lived on the second floor of a beautifully appointed two-bedroom brownstone in Prospect Park. Nicole was offered dinner and quizzed about her parents and her flight. The critical way Marie continuously ran her eyes over her as she spoke, gave Nicole the impression that she did not meet with her approval.  For the first time in her life she actually cared what someone thought about her. The feeling rankled, she was not used to feeling intimidated by anyone, but somehow that’s exactly how she felt around Marie!

Tales of the Qrypt – Business Part 4

Later as I lay on the beach after my swim, I marveled at how much had changed in the space of a few short weeks. I thought about Nicole and I wondered how and why she had gotten into her line of work. She was shrewd and I suspected that her every move was carefully thought out, calculated. My reverie was rudely interrupted by droplets of water falling on my forearm which covered my eyes. Peeking from under my arm I saw that a man was busily toweling himself off much too close for comfort. I sighed, with at least a mile of beach stretching away in both directions – he had no reason to be this close to me! I decided I was going to pretend I was asleep and maybe he’ll go away.

I lay there quietly and listened to the sounds he made as he vigorously shook out his towel, and rummaged around in a shopping bag. “Hello, did you enjoy your swim? I saw you go in earlier” I couldn’t believe it! He was speaking to me as though he didn’t notice I was pretending to sleep! I had the insane urge to giggle! Reluctantly I took my arm down and looked at him. He was big and tall, at least 6’-4” dark and solidly built. He didn’t sound local so I assumed he was a tourist. “Hello, yes I did thank you” I said politely as I stood up and began to put my skirt on. “Yes it’s a lovely day for a swim isn’t it? I like to come down here earlier in the morning but I’m glad I came late today or I won’t have met you! I’m Mark by the way” he said extending a large hand. I shook the hand “Hey I’m Sherry I said dryly”.

Tales from the Qrypt – Business Prt 2

Hendy secured a bar stool for me and went to get us drinks. I sat down and craned my neck to see what was going on onstage but I couldn’t see beyond the crowd.  I could tell by the whistles and applause that the show was a lively one. Hendy came back with drinks and as soon as I had taken my first sip he pulled me off my perch to dance.

We were dancing in the cramped space when someone tapped me on the shoulder and shouted above the music “Brandy?” I looked around and realized that a man I had seen earlier was trying to get my attention. I was confused for a moment ….. then I figured it out, obviously Nicole told him that my name was Brandy. I looked at him enquiringly and he extended a hand holding what looked like a business card “Nicole said to give you this” he said. I automatically took the card and he nodded and walked away through the crowd.
