Historical and Cultural Riches

Steeped in history, Antigua and Barbuda offer a fascinating journey into the past. A visit to Nelson’s Dockyard in English Harbour, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, provides a glimpse into the islands’ colonial history. This well-preserved Georgian naval dockyard, once a strategic base for the British Royal Navy, now serves as a vibrant cultural center with hotels, museums, shops, restaurants, sailmakers and even a bakery! The panoramic views from the dockyard and the historical significance of its structures are a testament to the islands’ rich heritage. Fort James and Fort Barrington are other historical sites that offer both intriguing history and stunning views.

Are you prepared?

I am more of a mental checklist kind of person. On the rare occasion when I do write a shopping list, I invariably forget that I had written it or where I had stored it in my phone. Wellness coach Alison T Smith believes that list obsession has something to do with the busyness of modern-day life. “Making lists has become more and more popular in recent years, especially for working parents, who are trying to pack more into their days,” she says. “People tend to have to wear many different hats throughout the day while holding down a full-time job.”

Are you the type of person who writes lists? If you are, then what is on your most important checklist? That list of things you want to accomplish in your lifetime. Does it contain exciting things to do? Places to visit, people to meet, and great feats to accomplish? Maybe it has some or all of the above! Are you prepared?  Does your checklist have everything essential for a meaningful and happy life?

The bucket list

A bucket list is defined as a number of experiences or achievements that a person hopes to have or accomplish during their lifetime. We all have a list of things we want to accomplish in our lifetime. The types of experiences or achievements that inhabit your bucket list are what helps to make your life more fulfilling, and meaningful.

I recently attended a wellness presentation during our Wellness Week of activities at work. The presenter Holly Christopher is a counselor at the university campus where I work. During Holly’s presentation, the one thing that stood out for me is how important it is to practice gratitude. Research shows that people who practice gratitude are more optimistic and feel better about their lives! My question is, should ‘practice gratitude’ appear on your bucket list?

2020 Bucket List Adventure

Yes, I know that we are experiencing the ‘second wave’ of the pandemic. Between me and you, I don’t quite know what that means. Is it now the ‘second wave’ because there are outbreaks in locales that did not previously have any cases? I’ve no idea! What I do know is that we must continue to be careful. Careful means washing our hands often, wearing masks, and staying the required distance apart.  How difficult is that?

The Show Must Go On

Despite the foregoing, life must go on. That is to say that those bitten by the travel bug like I am, will try as much as possible to continue exploring amazing destinations! I promised myself years ago that I’ll have a grand adventure each year as a birthday present to myself. Each time I see a beautiful photo or read a fascinating story about a country I haven’t yet visited, I add to my list. Those places on my bucket list are whispering in my ear and I dream of my next big adventure. As this year’s birthday present, I carefully picked a destination with relatively low infection rates. Now I’m anxiously watching the travel alerts and keeping my fingers crossed in the hope that I won’t have to cancel my travel plans.
